8/7/2023 0 Comments In Shadow of a Doubt, Young Charlie realizes that Uncle Charlie is a killer from what source?Uncle Charlie, we come to realize, has two basic modes: the charming, avuncular bon vivant and the cold-blooded misanthrope with fearsomely strong hands. He drops the act as soon as he sees the Newtons, but young Charlie has already caught a glimpse, even if she shrugs it off. On the train to Santa Rosa, California (the Newtons’ home), he uses the name “Otis” and hides in his berth, pretending to be an invalid. He then mutters to himself that they’ve got nothing on him, and gives them the slip when he goes out. We’ve already seen Uncle Charlie in his room in Philadelphia, money piled on the bedside table, his landlady telling him two men have been asking about him. She’s ecstatic, believing he somehow heard her via telepathy, and when he arrives, everything seems to be perfect. Shadow of a Doubt plays on this inconsistency, as Charles “Charlie” Oakley (Joseph Cotten), beloved uncle of Charlotte “Charlie” Newton (Teresa Wright) announces he’s coming to visit right as she’s preparing to invite him. On the other hand, you may know someone your whole life, yet not know them that well at all. Sometimes you know a person only a short time, but it feels like you know them awfully well. There’s an inconsistent correlation between how long we’ve known a person and how well we know them.
